A picture of a harbor on the coast of Maine with lobster boats conjures up what is for many an idyllic image of an unspoiled state. In this sense, the slogan Don't Jersey Maine might mean that we shouldn't install turnpikes or parking lots or shopping malls overmuch. But look further at this picture. Lobster wars with cut lines and sunk boats and even shot lobstermen are symptoms at times of an overexploited resource and at other times of an overdependence on undervalued resource extraction. In this second sense of scouring itself bare, Maine is already in danger of Jerseying itself.
